Sacredness mechanism
Sacredness arises when a belief leaves ordinary debate: questioning, contradicting, or disrespecting it becomes impermissible. The protected belief may concern religion, nation, law, science, markets, the environment, sport, or almost any shared value.
-
Trapped Prior mechanism
A trapped prior is a belief that has become resistant to correction: it filters, dismisses, or reinterprets incoming evidence so that the belief itself never has to change.
-
Bright-Line Rule principle
A bright-line rule turns a fuzzy judgment into a binary boundary: one side is permitted or correct, the other is not. The clarity can strengthen coordination and compliance, but it sacrifices nuance and can make compromise resemble betrayal.
-
In-group vs Out-group Dynamics mechanism
Sacred beliefs act as membership tests: reverence signals “us,” while dissent marks “them” or puts someone’s standing inside the group in doubt.
-
Costly Signaling mechanism
A claim becomes credible when proving it consumes enough money, time, effort, or risk to deter pretenders. What looks wasteful may be the mechanism: the cost filters [[cheap-talk|Cheap Talk]] into evidence.
-
Motivated Reasoning mental-model
Motivated reasoning begins with an emotionally or tribally acceptable conclusion and recruits evidence afterward. Because the impulse is symmetric, escaping one flattering falsehood can mean embracing an equally unsupported opposite.
-
Lindy effect mental-model
For durable, non-perishable ideas and practices, survival is evidence: the longer they have endured attacks, imitation, and changing contexts, the more remaining life you should provisionally expect.
-
Coordination Problem mechanism
Groups can miss a mutually beneficial outcome because each person’s best choice depends on others choosing compatibly. A conspicuous anchor—whether a leader, norm, or shared commitment—makes everyone else’s behavior easier to predict, though the resulting order may be arbitrary or unfair.
