Career Path Dependence Is Weak

Early credentials shape your first opportunities, but their influence weakens as demonstrated skills, relationships, and later choices accumulate. A degree branch is a starting position, not a career boundary.

Engineers do not merely drift into adjacent technical roles. They have moved into software, Bollywood, advertising, charity, and even cricket—careers for which the name of their engineering branch eventually explains very little.

The first gate is not the whole road

A credential matters most when little else is known about you: it helps institutions sort applicants and determines which early doors are easiest to open. But every subsequent role produces new evidence—skills you can demonstrate, people willing to trust you, and choices that redirect what you learn next. Over time, this accumulated evidence can outweigh the original label.

That is why path dependence here is weak, not absent. Your branch changes the cost and convenience of particular first moves; it does not make later moves impossible. Given a long enough horizon, sustained redirection can compound until the starting credential becomes biographical detail rather than professional identity—a career-scale instance of Gates's Law.

When comparing engineering branches, identify the concrete doors each option opens immediately, then separately list the skills and networks you could build to cross into another field later. Reject any decision argument that treats the branch name itself as an irreversible career sentence.
