When failure has an unmistakable human cost, attention sharpens: consequences that cannot be shrugged off make care feel necessary rather than optional. High stakes can concentrate effort, but they do not prove that greater commitment is always wise.

A spacecraft mistake is not followed by a mildly disappointed customer. It can end with people dying—and simply knowing that changes how carefully the work is done.

When consequences capture attention

The mechanism begins with a consequence that is both severe and impossible to misunderstand. Failure stops being an abstraction, so carelessness becomes harder to rationalize and attention is pulled toward avoiding irreversible error. That differs from effort-shock, where the surprise is the size of the workload: here, the concentrating force is the visible cost of getting the work wrong. The resulting commitment still needs deliberate-trade-off-selection; heightened care tells you that something matters, not which competing requirement should win.

Commitment is not correctness

This model is strongest when the danger is real, understood, and tied to the work. Merely declaring an ordinary task “critical” is not the same thing. Nor should commitment become escalation-of-commitment: the seriousness of failure can justify careful execution without justifying endless investment in a failing course. Extra vigilance also carries an opportunity-cost in time and attention.
