Someone races through difficult arithmetic in their head—and the surprising verdict is: that may not be mathematics at all. It is calculation, a visible performance sitting on the surface of a deeper discipline.

The spectacle displaces the standard

Proxies win attention because they are quick to observe and easy to compare. Calculation produces an immediate answer and an obvious display of speed; proof and deduction require you to inspect how a conclusion was built. The visible skill therefore inherits the prestige of the larger field, while its less theatrical core—logical justification—disappears from view. The mistake is categorical: competence at one operation is treated as mastery of the discipline that contains it.

Fast calculation demonstrates fluency with numbers, but it does not establish that someone can construct a proof, deduce consequences from premises, or reason logically. The performance is real; the error lies in enlarging what it proves.

Calling calculation a proxy does not make it worthless or unrelated to mathematics. It becomes misleading only when speed at calculation is used as sufficient evidence of the broader capacities—proof, deduction, and logic—that define the deeper work.

Replace the demonstration with a proof test

The next time a polished performance is offered as evidence of mastery, ask the performer to justify one result step by step: state the premises, show the deductions, and explain why the conclusion follows. That changes the test from producing the right output to revealing the underlying discipline.
