Contaminated steel

Contaminated steel is a provenance model: a material can carry the residue of the era and process that produced it, making its history more consequential than its apparent composition.

A sunken battleship can matter to the search for dark matter—not for its weapons or engineering, but because its steel predates the nuclear age.

History becomes a material property

Nuclear explosions introduced radioactive contamination that distinguishes steel made after 1945 from earlier steel. The crucial variable is therefore not simply steel, but steel’s production date relative to a world-changing event. Usually that residue is irrelevant. But when an instrument must detect extremely faint radiation, emissions from its own steel can become background noise, obscuring the signal it was built to measure. Provenance moves from historical trivia to functional specification.

Detectors that disturb the detection

Geiger counters and medical contamination monitors may require pre-1945 steel because radiation from later steel can interfere with the measurements they are supposed to make.

Residue matters only relative to the signal

This is not a claim that post-1945 steel is universally dangerous or inferior. Its provenance becomes decisive only when the residual emissions are large enough to interfere with an unusually sensitive measurement. Outside that context, treating all later steel as unusable would confuse detectability with practical harm.

Add provenance to the specification

Tomorrow, choose one tool, dataset, or material used in a sensitive decision and add a provenance field: when was it produced, through which process, and after what environmental or institutional rupture? Then test whether that history could generate the very noise you are trying to measure.
