Fertile land is only potential energy. Large domesticable animals convert it into usable agricultural power by supplying draft labor, allowing societies to cultivate more effectively than human muscle alone permits.

Pre-Columbian America had farmland but no cows or comparable large domesticated animals to pull ploughs. The constraint was not simply soil: people had to provide the tilling power themselves.

Agriculture needs both a productive landscape and a way to work it. Large domesticable animals multiply the energy available for tilling, turning biological muscle into agricultural infrastructure. Those outcomes also require suitable land, crops, organization, and the ability to preserve gains. Draft animals expand productive capacity; they do not determine what a society does with it.

When comparing historical farming systems, do not stop at rainfall and soil. Identify who or what supplied the energy for tilling—human labor, draft animals, or another technology—and then ask how that power source limited the area that could be cultivated.
