Exit Option and Bargaining Power
Bargaining power depends not only on what you can demand, but on what you can survive refusing. An independent source of support—even a modest one—can turn dependence into a credible option to say no.
A cash payment can change who gets heard at the dinner table. When women received money directly, their participation in family decisions increased—even though no formal household roles had changed.
E1The power behind a credible no
A bargain is lopsided when one side cannot afford its rejection. Dependence lets an employer or family power-holder impose terms because refusal threatens the dependent person’s basic security. An alternative income source changes that fallback position: the recipient can withstand disagreement, delay acceptance, or reject an exploitative offer. The money matters partly for what it buys, but also for the exit option it makes believable. That is why direct income can alter Household Bargaining Power before it transforms anyone’s overall wealth.
E1A foothold is not equality
The evidence supports a narrower claim than “cash eliminates domination.” Independent income improved bargaining power and participation; it did not necessarily erase coercion, unequal ownership, social sanctions, or every other source of dependence. An alternative strengthens your position only to the extent that it is reliable and sufficient to make refusal survivable.
E1Fund the refusal
Identify one negotiation in which accepting bad terms feels compulsory. Instead of rehearsing a stronger argument, build one concrete fallback first: a small personal reserve, a second buyer or employer, or direct access to income that another party cannot withdraw. Then negotiate from the option, not merely the hope, of walking away.
