Mission Creep
Mission creep begins when authority earned in a narrow function travels into adjacent functions without fresh evidence. The expansion becomes dangerous when trust in the original tool is mistaken for proof that its new claims are valid.
A system for calendars and agricultural rules did not stay a system for calendars and agriculture. Jyotish Shastra expanded into choosing auspicious moments, interpreting omens, and predicting lives from birth.
E1Authority travels farther than evidence
A tool first proves useful inside a bounded job. That success gives it institutional standing, familiar language, and trusted practitioners. Once nearby needs appear, extending the established tool feels cheaper and safer than admitting that a different method—or no reliable method—may be required.
But the extension carries the tool's reputation farther than its evidence. Calendar-making can establish competence at calendar-making; it does not automatically validate birth-based prediction. Likewise, an HR function that helped correct serious workplace failures does not thereby prove that every increasingly minor discomfort needs another policy. Mission creep feeds on this gap between continuity of authority and discontinuity of justification.
E1 E2Where it shows up
From seasons to destinies
Jyotish Shastra's movement from practical calendrical and agricultural rules toward omens, auspicious timings, and birth-based forecasts shows how one domain's legitimacy can be carried into claims of a different kind.
E1The policy machine
After company culture becomes reasonably decent, HR can preserve its sense of purpose by searching for smaller problems and issuing more policies. The institution keeps exercising an authority built while addressing larger harms, even as the target changes.
E2Expansion is not the offence
A successful tool should sometimes take on new work; refusing every extension would confuse discipline with stagnation. The test is whether the added job earns its own evidence and accountability. Mission creep is not merely Scope Creep: the central failure is borrowed legitimacy, not just an expanding workload.
Make the new claim requalify
When a trusted method or department proposes an adjacent role, write down the exact claim that justified its original authority and the claim required for the new job. Approve the extension only if the second claim has independent evidence; do not accept the first claim's reputation as a substitute.
