One-Way Door vs Two-Way Door Decisions
Classify a decision by reversibility before deciding how much deliberation it deserves. Move quickly through choices you can cheaply undo; reserve deeper research and testing for choices with no easy return.
The first question is not “What is the perfect choice?” It is: “Once I take this decision, can I reverse it easily or not?” A two-way door lets you return; a one-way door has “no going back.” Treating both alike turns ordinary caution into analysis-paralysis.

Reversibility changes the price of being wrong. With a two-way door, action itself can produce information: decide, observe the result, and correct course. With a one-way door, learning after commitment may arrive too late, so evidence, simulation, and small experiments become more valuable. The model therefore allocates attention by recoverability, not merely by how important or emotionally charged a choice feels. Classify the door by the full cost of reversal, not by whether you can technically change your mind.
Write the exit route before debating
For tomorrow’s decision, write one sentence describing how you would reverse it and what reversal would cost. If the exit is cheap, set a short deadline, choose, and define what result would trigger correction. If no credible exit exists, identify the smallest experiment that preserves your remaining levers—an application of the dichotomy-of-control before committing.
