An ordinary product is the visible endpoint of a vast dependency graph. Specialization and coordination compress contributions from across the world into objects that appear simple only because you do not have to reproduce their supply chains yourself.

A chicken sandwich takes minutes to assemble—unless you insist on making every ingredient yourself. One attempt took six months and cost $1,500; making a toaster from scratch took nine months and more than £1,100. The cheap breakfast was never truly simple.

Complexity hidden by the price tag

You can buy toast cheaply because you are purchasing the endpoint of distributed work, not personally mastering every step behind it. Different people supply materials, knowledge, tools, transport, and labor; coordination joins those contributions into one usable object. Specialization makes each participant responsible for only a narrow part of the dependency graph.

The finished product conceals that graph. A pencil, toaster, sandwich, or cup of chai feels self-contained because the relationships required to produce it have been compressed into availability and price. Trying to recreate one item alone makes the hidden dependencies visible—and makes familiar abundance look extraordinary.

The same interdependence that lowers the cost of breakfast also means the finished object depends on coordination continuing to work.

Tomorrow, choose one item from breakfast and trace at least five dependencies behind it: ingredients or materials, tools, labor, transport, and knowledge. Then identify which dependency you could actually replace yourself. The gaps reveal what the object—and its price—have been hiding.
