P-value
A p-value measures how surprising the observed evidence would be if the null hypothesis were true. A low value weakens that ordinary explanation; it does not automatically establish a preferred alternative.

Begin with a null hypothesis: nothing unusual is influencing the outcome, so chance remains sufficient. The p-value then asks how compatible the observed streak is with that baseline. In the episode’s account, science tries to push this probability below 5%, written as p < 0.05. Crossing that threshold weakens the null because the evidence would be unusually surprising if it were true.

A low p-value can make the null less credible, but it does not identify what caused the result or prove a particular rival explanation. An ordinary-looking p-value is also not proof that the null is true; it means chance remains viable.
Test the boring explanation first
When a streak tempts you to declare skill, bias, or conspiracy, write down the chance-based null before interpreting it. Then ask how often that null would produce evidence at least this surprising; do not name a cause merely because the outcome looks remarkable.
