Proxy Failure

mechanism

A proxy is useful only while it remains difficult to produce without the underlying quality it represents. Once polished signals can be generated independently of substance, judging by those signals becomes unreliable.

An article with clean grammar, crisp structure, and a compelling title once signalled care and competence. Now the same polish may reveal nothing more than access to ChatGPT.

When the signal becomes cheaper than the substance

Decision-makers rarely inspect quality directly; they use visible traits that have historically travelled with it. Good writing mechanics worked because producing them usually required some of the effort and ability involved in producing worthwhile content. Generative tools split that connection: the visible signal can now be manufactured without the reasoning it used to imply. The proxy still looks familiar, so evaluators keep trusting it even after its predictive value has collapsed.

Polish has not become meaningless

Generated presentation does not prove that the underlying content is poor. It means presentation alone can no longer distinguish careful thinking from cheaply produced fluency. The proxy has failed as sufficient evidence, not necessarily as one clue among several.

Test what polish cannot supply

The next time an article impresses you on presentation, ignore its finish for one pass and extract its central claim, evidence, and reasoning chain. Base your judgment on whether those three survive scrutiny, not on how professionally they were packaged.
