Pyramid Scheme
A pyramid scheme is a recruitment-dependent structure: earlier participants can be paid only while an expanding base of newcomers keeps supplying money. The decisive test is whether genuine customer demand can sustain the payouts after recruitment stops.
Imagine freezing recruitment tomorrow. If the business does not merely shrink but collapses, the recruits were not supporting the enterprise—they were the enterprise.
E1The downline must keep widening
The structure promises benefits to people already inside while making new entrants the essential source of support. That creates a mathematical dependency: each layer needs another layer beneath it, so stability requires continued expansion rather than durable customer value. Like a Ponzi scheme, it can look functional while fresh money is arriving; the difference is best understood by tracing roles and cash flows through mlm-pyramid-schemes-ponzi-schemes. Early payouts may also generate sincere testimonials, even though those payouts say nothing about whether the structure can survive.
E1Recruitment alone is not the verdict
A company hiring sellers or building a distributor network is not automatically a pyramid scheme. The boundary is economic dependence: can real customers support participants when recruitment stops? That is the revealing distinction between a recruitment pyramid and an MLM that claims independent product demand.
E1Run the zero-recruitment test
Before joining, redraw the opportunity with recruitment set to zero. Identify who would still buy the product, where participant payouts would come from, and whether those payments reflect customer value or entry by newcomers. Ignore the stated mission and follow the actual rewards—the same discipline used in understanding-incentives. If the model fails without a growing downline, walk away.
