A stationary bandit extracts repeatedly, so it has an incentive to preserve the productive base—and protect it from rivals—rather than seize everything at once. Stable taxation and protection can therefore outperform uncontrolled predation without ceasing to be extraction.

The thief who returns every harvest may be better for your farm than the thief who visits once. A stationary bandit takes a recurring share but stops a stronger raider from taking everything.

Why repetition changes the predator

A roving bandit maximizes the present raid: there may be no future relationship worth preserving. A stationary bandit expects to extract again, so destroying the farm destroys future income. Repetition aligns part of the bandit’s interest with the farmer’s productivity. Protection then becomes economically useful—not necessarily benevolent—because rival predators threaten both the producer and the stationary extractor.

Stable extraction is still extraction

The model applies only while the settled authority preserves production and actually prevents worse predation. If it takes enough to ruin the farm, or cannot keep rival bandits out, the advantage disappears. Stability alone does not turn coercion into legitimacy.

Inspect the protector’s time horizon

When evaluating a tax, platform fee, protection arrangement, or governing authority, ask what future revenue it loses if you stop producing. Then check whether that recurring stake measurably restrains extraction and funds protection from a worse alternative.
