Thrombosis and Embolism
A clot or dislodged plaque becomes an embolism when it travels through the bloodstream; if it reaches a vessel narrower than itself, it can stop blood flow, deprive downstream tissue of oxygen, and cause that tissue to die.
The dangerous blockage may not stay where it formed. A sudden surge can knock material loose, sending it downstream until a narrowing turns a moving fragment into a plug—and living tissue beyond it begins dying from lack of oxygen.

The mechanism has three moving parts: material that can break free, blood flow that carries it, and a vessel whose diameter eventually becomes too small. Atherosclerotic plaque formation creates one possible source of that material. Once dislodged, the fragment travels rather than necessarily blocking the vessel at its origin. The geometry of the vascular network does the rest: as the route narrows, the fragment lodges, flow stops, and oxygen can no longer reach the tissue supplied from that point onward.
