  1. When evidence doubles as a badge of group loyalty, reasoning can become identity defence: people accept conclusions that protect their side and resist those that threaten it. The social value of being aligned can outweigh the value of being accurate.

  2. Motivated Reasoning mental-model

Motivated reasoning begins with an emotionally or tribally acceptable conclusion and recruits evidence afterward. Because the impulse is symmetric, escaping one flattering falsehood can mean embracing an equally unsupported opposite.

  3. Confirmation Bias mechanism

Confirmation bias lets prior belief judge the evidence meant to test it: attention preserves supporting hits, interpretation excuses conflicting misses, and memory turns the resulting imbalance into apparent proof.

  4. Expertise Selection Bias mechanism

People often decide who qualifies as an expert only after hearing the expert’s conclusion, accepting expertise that confirms their politics and disqualifying expertise that challenges it.

  5. Tribalism mechanism

Tribalism turns disagreement into a belonging test: when group membership feels more valuable than accuracy, a person may knowingly accept the group’s wrong answer rather than be right alone.

  6. Depoliticized Institutions principle

Technical decisions can improve when professional institutions select experts through neutral mechanisms, insulating expertise from popular identity conflict.

  7. Preference Falsification mechanism

People publicly state beliefs they privately reject when honesty threatens belonging or invites attack. Because everyone observes everyone else’s performance, widespread self-censorship can make an unpopular position look like a consensus.

  8. Politicization mechanism

Politicization converts an issue into a badge of group membership. After leaders cast it as us versus them, stating a position can become an act of loyalty rather than an independent judgment.
