Adaptive immunity improves through a cycle of variation, selection, and memory: it tries responses, retains an effective one, and enters the next encounter better prepared. It is [[antifragility]] made durable through stored adaptation.

The immune system does not need to begin with the right answer. It can try multiple responses during an attack, discover one that works, and remember it—turning an encounter with danger into preparation for the next one.

Search, select, store

Three moving parts matter. Variation creates more than one possible response. Selection distinguishes the response that succeeds against the present attack. Memory preserves that result so a future encounter does not begin from zero. The benefit therefore comes not from exposure alone, but from converting feedback into a retained change. That makes adaptive immunity a precise form of stress-adaptation: a survivable challenge supplies information that alters later performance.

Yesterday’s answer can expire

The mechanism requires both survival and useful memory. An overwhelming attack can exceed the system’s opportunity to learn, while a changing adversary can make a previously successful response less useful. Nor should individual adaptation be confused with herd-immunity, where protection depends on transmission patterns across a population rather than one body remembering an encounter.
