Error-Based Learning
Learning accelerates when mistakes are small enough to survive, visible enough to teach, and followed by adjustment. Punish each miss, and the learner starts optimizing for safety instead of adaptation.
A classroom full of mistakes may be doing more learning than a classroom producing flawless answers. The apparent disorder—students experimenting, failing, and trying again—is the process, not evidence that the process has broken.
E1The mistake must complete the loop
Error-based learning needs three moving parts: an attempt, an observable consequence, and another attempt altered by that feedback. Repetition alone is insufficient; the learner must discover what failed and change the response. This is antifragility at a human scale: small failures become inputs that improve future performance. It also explains why the Testing Effect can outperform passive review—the attempt exposes a gap that rereading may conceal. Punishment interrupts this loop by making error avoidance the immediate goal.

The principle depends on mistakes being survivable and their consequences being legible. A costly, irreversible failure cannot support repeated adjustment, while ambiguous feedback can teach the wrong lesson. Error Management Theory adds a further caution: when different mistakes carry radically different costs, minimizing total errors may be less important than preventing the dangerous kind.

Before tomorrow’s real performance, create three low-stakes attempts. After each one, record the specific miss, its consequence, and the single change you will test next. That turns measurement into an adaptation loop rather than a scorecard.
