Tracking errors turns vague underperformance into a map for correction. Once misses are classified and compared over time, practice can target a recurring failure instead of merely repeating the task.

A basketball shot is not simply a make or a miss. One player records whether each miss went left, right, or fell short—because ten failures in one direction reveal something that a raw shooting percentage cannot.

Turn misses into coordinates

Measurement separates performance into observable outcomes. Recording not only whether you failed but how you failed creates categories; repeated categories expose patterns; those patterns suggest what to correct in the next attempt. The count then shows whether that correction changed the distribution of errors. This makes measurement the information layer inside deliberate practice: attempt, classify, adjust, compare.

If most shots fall short, the useful practice problem is no longer “shoot better.” It is the specific, testable tendency producing short shots. Tracking left, right, and short misses converts a disappointing session into evidence for the next one.

A count is only as good as its categories

Measurement helps when the recorded distinction points toward a correctable feature. A total make–miss count may show that performance changed while concealing why; poorly chosen categories can produce confident tracking without useful diagnosis.

Add one diagnostic column

Tomorrow, choose one repeated skill and log ten attempts. Record the result, then add one concept-specific error category—such as left, right, or short—instead of keeping only a success total. Use the most frequent miss to choose the next drill.
