Rote Learning as Infrastructure
Memorization is not the enemy of understanding; badly managed memorization is. Done well, rote learning supplies reliable mental building blocks for higher-level reasoning and skill.
The uncomfortable claim is that rote learning is necessary. What makes it feel pointless or punishing is not memorization itself, but the way we usually do it.
E1Understanding needs something to stand on
Reasoning cannot operate entirely through fresh discovery. Some facts, procedures, and distinctions must already be available as dependable components. When those components are learned badly, repeated drilling consumes effort without producing reliable recall, so rote learning gets blamed for a failure of method. Managed well, memorization turns recurring material into accessible infrastructure: fewer interruptions for reconstruction or lookup, and more attention left for combining ideas and solving the problem above them. Recall alone does not prove understanding, judgment, or the ability to transfer knowledge into a new situation. Memorize the next bottleneck
Choose one small set of facts or procedures that you repeatedly stop to reconstruct or look up. Practice only that set, and schedule each review near the point when recall begins to weaken—the Just-in-Time Revision approach—then test whether the resulting fluency makes the higher-level task easier.
