Knowledge compounds because every concept you learn expands the set of analogies available for understanding the next one. Learning therefore improves not only what you know, but how quickly unfamiliar ideas can become intelligible.

The beginner and the expert can hear the same new idea, yet the expert may grasp it faster—not because the explanation changed, but because the expert has more concepts available to connect it to.

Every concept becomes connective tissue

A new idea rarely enters an empty mind cleanly. You understand it by mapping it onto something already known: noticing a shared structure, drawing a contrast, or borrowing an existing explanation. Each learned concept therefore becomes a potential hook for later learning. As those hooks accumulate, the odds rise that unfamiliar material will resemble something in your mental library. This is the feedback loop inside Compounding: more knowledge creates more routes for acquiring knowledge.

Connections can also mislead

An analogy makes a new idea easier to approach, but resemblance is not identity. Knowledge compounds only when the borrowed model clarifies the new material; a seductive but inaccurate comparison can make misunderstanding compound instead.

Attach one new idea to two old ones

Tomorrow, after learning a concept, write down one thing it resembles and one thing it differs from. That gives the idea explicit hooks in your existing library—and makes it more likely to become a hook for something else later.
