Cultural Learning
Humans gain a distinctive advantage by acquiring working behavior from one another. Imitation lets discoveries travel beyond the individual who made them and accumulate across generations.
Give toddlers and apes problems involving quantities, physical causes, or space, and their abilities look surprisingly similar. Change the problem to learning from another individual, and the toddlers pull far ahead.
E1Borrowed discovery compounds
Individual learning begins from direct trial and error; cultural learning begins from somebody else’s results. By observing and copying, you can acquire a behavior without independently reconstructing every discovery behind it. Copying therefore turns one person’s learning into a starting point for others.
Repeated transmission creates culture-as-accumulated-imitation: behaviors can persist, spread, and become inputs for further improvement. The advantage is not merely faster learning by one person, but accumulation across many people and generations.

The toddler comparison establishes an unusual strength in social learning; it does not show that whatever humans copy is correct. imitation-of-the-successful can carry an entire behavioral bundle, including parts unrelated to success. Cultural learning explains how practices travel, not whether each inherited practice still fits its environment—a gap that can produce adaptive-lag.
E1Copy one observable sequence
For a skill you are trying to acquire, choose someone who already performs it well and reproduce one complete, visible sequence of their behavior before redesigning it. Treat imitation as your first working draft; once you can execute the sequence, test which parts actually matter.
