In Praise of Copying and Imitation

Copying is not the enemy of originality; it is how humans acquire working judgment before they can explain it. Imitation carries tacit standards and hidden constraints that first principles alone may miss.

Human toddlers did roughly as well as apes on tests of memory, logic, and spatial reasoning. Then the task required learning from another person—and the toddlers dominated. The supposedly low-status act of copying may be one of the abilities that makes human achievement possible.

Borrow the pattern before you understand it

A beginner cannot see every constraint that makes a practice work. By imitating a competent model, you reproduce more than the visible steps: you also inherit timing, emphasis, sequencing, and standards you do not yet know how to name. Repetition then installs a feel for what works; explanation and variation can come later.

This is why imitation scales beyond individual learning. Once useful behavior can be copied, each generation need not reconstruct it from scratch. Practices accumulate into culture, allowing working knowledge to travel before anyone has a complete theory of it.

Copying is most reliable when the model’s demonstrated competence belongs to the domain you are learning; otherwise visible success becomes a misleading shortcut.

Choose a model and reproduce one artifact

Pick one person whose competence is visible in the exact craft you want to learn. Tomorrow, reproduce one small piece of their work as closely as possible—its structure, sequence, and choices—then mark the places where you could copy the move but could not yet explain why it worked.
