Bad imports become survivable when a society has time to detect the mismatch and develop local corrections. Adaptive Lag appears when copying accelerates beyond that corrective capacity.
Modern technology should make societies better at correcting mistakes. Instead, it can make mistakes spread so quickly that correction never catches up.

Imported practices create two separate timelines: adoption and adaptation. Technology compresses the first by moving ideas, products, and prestige across borders almost instantly. But discovering a mismatch, absorbing its costs, and developing a locally workable alternative still takes time. When adoption accelerates while correction does not, each new import arrives before the previous one has been properly tested or repaired. The danger is therefore not cultural borrowing itself, but a widening gap between how fast a society can copy and how fast it can learn from copying badly.

The model does not imply that every foreign practice is unsuitable or that slower change is inherently wiser. Adaptive Lag matters when an import produces a local mismatch and the next wave of change arrives before that mismatch can be recognized and corrected.

Before rapidly scaling an imported practice, specify how you will detect a local mismatch and preserve enough time to revise it. If adoption has a deadline but correction has no interval, you are designing the lag in from the start.
