Working Memory vs Long-Term Memory
Working memory is a narrow workspace; long-term memory holds reusable knowledge that keeps that workspace available for reasoning.
The memory you use to think is sharply limited, while the store it draws from is described as effectively unlimited. The bottleneck in learning is therefore not simply how much you can retain, but how much you must juggle at once.
E1Move knowledge out of the workspace
Working memory handles what is active right now. When every fact must remain active separately, those facts compete for scarce space and leave less capacity for reasoning. Once important material becomes durable in long-term memory, it can return as familiar knowledge rather than another loose item to hold. Chunking can tighten the bottleneck further by making several details function as one meaningful unit.
E1Capacity is not the same as access
The capacity contrast alone does not explain how knowledge enters long-term memory or how reliably it can be retrieved. Calling long-term memory “unlimited” identifies where durable learning belongs; it does not show that exposure automatically produces usable recall.
E1Schedule retrieval, not rereading
Choose one fact or pattern you repeatedly need, turn it into a question, and test yourself on it tomorrow without looking at the answer. Then use Spaced Repetition to revisit it at widening intervals until recalling it no longer consumes the workspace needed for the larger problem.
