Spaced repetition turns memory into a timing problem: revisit an idea near the point of forgetting, then lengthen the interval as recall becomes more durable.

The useful moment to revise is not when an idea still feels familiar. It is just when you are about to forget it—and each successful return lets you wait longer before the next one.

Make forgetting set the schedule

A first encounter leaves knowledge vulnerable to decay. Re-exposure interrupts that loss and strengthens retrieval, so the memory survives a longer gap the next time. The moving parts are therefore recall, timing, and expanding intervals: return near the edge of forgetting, reinforce the trace, then increase the delay—potentially at an exponential rate. Spacing concentrates repetition where memory is becoming fragile instead of repeatedly rehearsing what is still easy.

Watching or reading something once can produce immediate understanding without durable memory. If the idea never returns, much of it is lost; encountering it again at spaced intervals is what gives it a chance to persist.

The expanding review cycle

Early reviews may need to be close together. As each retrieval strengthens the memory, later reviews can be scheduled progressively farther apart rather than repeated at one fixed frequency.

Spacing cannot rescue a missed return

The model depends on revisiting knowledge near the point of forgetting. A single exposure is insufficient, while waiting until the material has vanished defeats the proposed timing advantage. The intervals must respond to how secure the memory has become.

Choose one idea you learned today and set a short first review. If you can retrieve it, schedule the next review after a longer gap; keep expanding the interval after each successful recall instead of rereading it every day.
