Spaced repetition memory
Spaced repetition turns memory into a scheduling problem: review an item near the point of forgetting, and effort concentrates on knowledge that is actually due rather than what is already secure.
Reviewing sooner can be worse. If a fact was not yet in danger of disappearing, revisiting it consumed study time without doing the most useful work: catching the memory near the point where it would otherwise be lost.

A new item can vanish from working memory within seconds. Recall it again and the next forgetting interval stretches to minutes; repeat this cycle enough times and the item moves toward durable long-term storage. The efficient moment is therefore neither immediately nor after the fact, but just before forgetting. Software such as Anki makes this scalable by scheduling each card separately, so tomorrow’s workload contains only the items whose intervals have come due. Chunking changes how much information one mental unit can hold; spaced repetition changes when that unit returns.

Making your own cards requires more effort up front, but that effort forces you to reconstruct the idea in your own terms. The review system then reinforces a representation you have already worked to understand, rather than somebody else’s wording.
