Working memory puts a tight ceiling on conscious reasoning: you can juggle only a handful of units at once. Expertise works around that ceiling by packing more meaning into each unit, not by abolishing the limit.

Being smarter does not let you keep adding thoughts to the mental juggling act. However capable you are, conscious attention still runs into roughly the same small limit: about five to nine concepts at once.

The unit matters more than the slots

Reasoning depends on the few units you can keep active together. Once those slots are occupied, another detail competes with something already there. The useful escape is compression: through Chunking, several details become one meaningful structure. The number of active units stays small, but each unit carries more information, leaving room to reason at a higher level.

A range is not a personal verdict

Five to nine is a rough capacity claim, not a precise score for every person or task. More importantly, compression only helps when the chunk is meaningful to you; bundling unfamiliar details under a label does not automatically produce understanding.

Redesign the unit

Tomorrow, when a task presents too many moving parts, write them down and group them into a few named structures before reasoning further. If you still need to consciously rehearse every component, the structure is not yet functioning as a chunk.
