Chunking does not enlarge working memory; it compresses many details into fewer meaningful units, freeing attention for higher-level learning.
The five digits 98220 need not occupy five separate places in your mind. Once recognized as a single meaningful pattern, the whole sequence can take up just one unit.

Working memory handles units, not some fixed measure of raw detail. At first, each unfamiliar element demands its own slot. When those elements become a familiar pattern, the mind can retrieve and manipulate the pattern as one chunk. The details remain inside it, but they no longer compete separately for attention. This compression is what makes room for higher-level learning: you can think with assembled structures instead of continually rebuilding them from their smallest parts.
