Knowledge can be compressed recursively: individual details form chunks, and those chunks become parts of larger conceptual structures. This lets you handle a whole hierarchy as a small number of meaningful units.

A memory chunk need not remain a single bundle. It can become one branch inside a much larger tree—a chunk made of chunks.

Compression becomes architecture

Chunking turns several details into one meaningful unit. Hierarchical chunking repeats that operation: established units are grouped into higher-level units, producing layers rather than one flat collection. The details remain underneath, but reasoning can happen at the level of branches and trees instead of isolated leaves.

A label is not a hierarchy

Grouping details once does not create layered knowledge. The mechanism requires meaningful relationships between lower-level chunks and the larger structures containing them; otherwise the apparent tree is merely a set of names and risks the Illusion of Explanatory Depth.

Draw the chunk tree

Take one subject you are learning and draw its hierarchy: place the main model at the top, its component chunks beneath it, and the specific details under each component. Any detail you cannot place exposes either a missing relationship or a chunk you do not yet understand.
