Expertise turns System 2 tasks into System 1
Repetition can compile a deliberate System 2 procedure into fast System 1 recognition: instead of consciously calculating each step, you experience the result as already known.
You probably cannot observe yourself calculating two plus two. The answer—four—arrives before any conscious procedure does, even though addition is the kind of operation that can require deliberate thought.
E1When calculation becomes retrieval
Repeatedly executing the same procedure changes the work your mind must do. At first, System 2 holds the steps in attention and computes the result. With enough repetition, the familiar input becomes directly associated with its answer, so System 1 can return it as recognition rather than reconstructing it through calculation. Expertise, in this sense, is partly compression: repeated reasoning is compiled into Automaticity, making a once-effortful operation feel immediate.

The arithmetic has been performed so often that “four” is retrieved as something known. The vanished calculation is precisely the evidence that the procedure has become automatic.
E1Fluency is narrower than understanding
The example establishes automaticity for a heavily repeated, stable problem; it does not show that repetition makes System 1 reliable in unfamiliar or changing conditions. An answer that arrives instantly may reflect compiled experience, but speed alone cannot certify that the learned pattern fits the present case.
E1Compile one recurring operation
Choose one small procedure you still reconstruct each time—an essential calculation, command sequence, or diagnostic check—and practise the identical core steps until you can produce them without holding each step in working memory. Then spend the freed attention on exceptions and judgment, not merely greater speed.
