System 1 is built to resolve situations quickly. Trouble begins when it decides that a problem falls within its competence even when the problem actually demands effortful reasoning. Its answer then arrives with the feeling of obviousness, removing the very signal that might recruit System 2. Bias is therefore not merely a bad conclusion; it is a failure of cognitive escalation: the quick process misclassifies the task, answers it, and closes the inquiry before deliberate correction begins.

The model does not imply that every intuitive answer is wrong or that System 2 should inspect every routine choice. The failure occurs when System 1 claims a situation it cannot actually handle. The practical tension is that fast judgment is useful precisely because constant deliberation would be costly, yet its confidence does not reliably reveal when escalation is needed.

Choose one recurring class of consequential decision—such as estimating a probability or making an irreversible commitment—and require a written second answer before acting: first record the immediate judgment, then state what evidence would make it wrong. The rule forces System 2 into cases where System 1 would otherwise declare the matter settled.
