Antibiotic resistance is evolution under repeated chemical pressure: frequent exposure favors bacteria that survive treatment, so later infections become harder to treat and a useful medicine loses power over time.

An antibiotic can succeed today and help make itself less effective tomorrow. Each repeated use exposes bacteria to the same threat, creating another opportunity for resistant survivors to outlast susceptible competitors.

The treatment becomes the selection pressure

Antibiotics do not persuade individual bacteria to become resistant. They change which bacteria survive and reproduce. Repeated exposure removes susceptible bacteria while favoring variants able to endure the drug; those survivors become a larger share of the bacterial population. What looks like a static contest between medicine and germs is therefore a moving evolutionary contest: heavy use repeatedly rewards the trait that defeats the treatment.

Necessary treatment is not the enemy

This mechanism is not an argument against antibiotics. They can be lifesaving, and avoiding a needed course carries its own serious risks. The boundary is repeated exposure: the evolutionary cost rises when use is heavier than the medical benefit requires. Antibiotic Stewardship is the practical response to that trade-off.

Make necessity part of the prescription

When antibiotics are proposed, ask what evidence suggests a bacterial infection and whether treatment is necessary now. The goal is not reflexive refusal; it is to avoid adding selection pressure when the drug is unlikely to provide a real benefit.
