Charm pricing exploits left-digit bias: ₹499 is categorized as belonging to the ₹400s, even though it is only ₹1 below ₹500.

₹499 looks safely inside the ₹400s. Yet the supposed gap from ₹500 is a single rupee.

The category changes before the cost does

Your brain does not always evaluate every digit with equal weight. It encounters the leftmost digit first and uses it to classify the price: ₹499 begins with four, so it feels anchored to the ₹400 range rather than treated as practically ₹500. The seller changes the buyer’s mental bucket while barely changing the amount charged—a narrow application of Anchoring.

A shifted digit is not a genuine saving
