A body under physiological stress diverts limited resources toward immediate regulation, leaving less capacity for reasoning, precision, and sustained attention. What looks like poor effort or ability may instead be the cognitive cost of keeping the body stable.

Your brain does not operate separately from the body’s resource budget. Under thermal stress, maintaining a safe internal temperature becomes the urgent job. Blood flow is redirected toward the skin, and the resources left for cognitive processing shrink. Reasoning slows and decision quality falls—not necessarily because you lack motivation or skill, but because physiological regulation has taken priority.

High temperature can degrade both physical and mental performance through the same reallocation: more blood goes toward cooling at the skin, while muscles and the brain receive less. Slower processing and poorer decisions are downstream effects of that bodily trade-off.

Resource diversion explains cognitive decline when a physiological load is actually present; it does not turn every bad decision into a heat problem. Knowledge gaps, weak incentives, distraction, and poor judgment can produce similar outward failures, so the mechanism should be diagnosed rather than assumed.
Cool first, decide second
Before doing precision work or making an important decision in high heat, reduce the thermal load: move to a cooler setting and postpone the demanding task until your body no longer has to spend so much of its budget on cooling.
