Thermal Stress
Thermal stress begins when ambient heat enters the body faster than the body can shed it. The resulting survival response redirects fluids, blood flow, attention, and stress capacity away from physical and cognitive work.
A difficult task can become harder without changing at all: raise the temperature past the body’s cooling threshold, and cognitive performance falls.
E1Cooling becomes the body’s priority
Once heat accumulates faster than it can escape, the body shifts into regulation mode. Sweating and increased skin blood flow help defend a safe internal temperature, but they also consume fluids and physiological capacity. Attention and stress responses are pulled toward managing the thermal load. The result is Cognitive Resource Diversion: less capacity remains for sustained attention, precise judgment, and physical output—not because motivation vanished, but because survival took precedence.

The mechanism depends on crossing a physiological boundary: heat must be entering faster than the body can remove it. Below that threshold, thermal stress cannot automatically explain weak performance; above it, the model identifies a cause of impairment but does not establish that every error or slowdown came from heat.
E1Change the thermal load before judging the worker
When thinking or output deteriorates in a hot setting, reduce the ambient heat or move the task to a cooler environment before diagnosing laziness, low skill, or poor discipline. Then reassess performance after the body is no longer spending its capacity on cooling.
