“Stress” is not a single cardiovascular exposure. Risk depends on what activates the response, how intensely and often it occurs, and whether the body returns to baseline afterward.
A burst of anger can double the risk of a heart attack for the next two hours. Something that feels purely psychological can rapidly alter the machinery of a biological pump.

The heart supplies oxygen and glucose by pushing blood through vessels. Under threat, the sympathetic nervous system prepares that system for immediate demand: the heart beats faster and harder, blood pressure rises, vessels constrict, stored energy enters the bloodstream, and blood becomes more prone to clotting. The parasympathetic system drives the opposing state—slowing the heart, lowering pressure, and opening vessels. These modes cannot dominate simultaneously.
That makes timing crucial. A short emergency response is different from repeatedly running the cardiovascular system in emergency mode. The visible stressor matters less than the hidden pattern underneath it: activation, accumulated load, adaptation, and recovery.
