Vicious Cycle
A vicious cycle begins when a system’s correction increases the pressure that triggered it, demanding an even stronger correction on the next round.
Under sustained cardiovascular pressure, working harder does not necessarily restore control. The heart pumps harder, the vessels thicken—and the thickened vessels make the heart pump harder still.
E1When compensation becomes fresh pressure
The loop has three moving parts: an initial load, a compensatory response, and a structural change that feeds the load back into the system. Pressure calls for more pumping; vessels respond by thickening; thicker vessels make flow harder, raising the pumping demand again. What helps in one moment becomes the cause of the next escalation.
This is the dangerous edge of stress-adaptation: reinforcement can be protective under manageable load, but under persistent chronic-stress-load it may lock the system into self-amplification. The heart’s continued compensation is closely connected to thickening of the left ventricle.

Harder pumping and thicker vessels do not remain separate consequences of stress. Each intensifies the condition producing the other, turning compensation into a repeating demand for still more compensation.
E1Adaptation is not automatically a trap
A response is not a vicious cycle merely because it has costs. The model applies only when the response feeds back to worsen the original pressure; limited stress can instead produce useful adaptation. With only this cardiovascular instance, the same loop should not be assumed in unrelated systems without tracing that feedback.
Audit the correction, not just the problem
Tomorrow, take one recurring problem and draw three arrows: pressure → correction → new pressure. If the correction increases the condition that triggered it, target that feedback link instead of simply applying more of the same correction.
