Boiling Frog Syndrome
People often tolerate harmful change when each increment is too small to trigger resistance. As expectations repeatedly reset, the accumulated shift can become normal before it becomes alarming.
A frog dropped into hot water would react immediately. But in the episode’s unsettling image, a frog placed in cold water stays while the temperature rises so gradually that it never jumps out.
E1The danger hides between comparisons
Resistance responds to the size of the change you notice, not necessarily to the size of the change that has accumulated. When each increase is slight, the present feels close enough to the immediate past to escape alarm. That slightly altered present then becomes the baseline for judging the next increase. Repeated often enough, this local adaptation conceals a large overall deterioration—a close cousin of Shifting Baseline Syndrome.

The frog story supplies a metaphor for unnoticed escalation, not proof that every slow change escapes detection or ends badly. Incremental change can be deliberate, measurable, and beneficial. The model matters when adaptation dulls your response while the cumulative direction remains harmful.

Choose one condition you suspect has been worsening and record today’s level beside its original baseline—not merely yesterday’s level. Set a concrete threshold in advance that will trigger action, so each new increment cannot quietly redefine what you accept.
