An east-west continental axis accelerates diffusion because crops and techniques can move between broadly similar climates. North-south movement crosses changing latitude bands, repeatedly forcing adaptation before useful knowledge can spread further.

The same farming invention that can race across Asia may stall while moving through the Americas—not because people farther along the route are less inventive, but because the route itself keeps changing the climate.

Latitude acts like a compatibility layer

Places at roughly the same latitude tend to share important climatic conditions. That makes an established crop, technique, or technology more likely to remain useful as it travels east or west. Each successful adaptation can therefore spread without being rebuilt from scratch, allowing improvements to accumulate across a much larger connected area.

North-south diffusion faces a different problem. Moving across latitudes means encountering new climate bands, so what worked in one region may need modification or replacement in the next. This latitude tax interrupts transmission: knowledge can still travel, but each ecological boundary raises the cost and slows the compounding process. This is one geographic mechanism within the broader Guns, Germs, and Steel thesis, not a claim about differences in human capacity.

In the Americas, moving an invention north or south repeatedly changes its environmental setting. Diffusion becomes a sequence of local reinventions rather than one largely continuous transfer.

An east-west axis does not make every technique portable, and a north-south axis does not make diffusion impossible. The claim is comparative: similar latitudes often reduce climatic friction, while changing latitudes more often demand adaptation. It explains one constraint on transmission, not every society’s outcome.

When asking why an idea or agricultural practice spread unevenly, trace its route on a latitude map. Count where it could travel through comparable climates and where crossing into a new band would have required redesign; investigate those transition points before attributing the pattern to culture or ingenuity.
