Emergent Order Without a Plan
Large systems can advance without a central plan because many conflicting local efforts cancel out while a small net movement survives. Direction comes from continual adjustment across the system, not from every participant pulling the same way.
Mark Twain’s ants expend perhaps 100 units of effort dragging their prize in random directions—yet only about ten units survive the tug-of-war, and the prize still moves roughly where it needs to go.

Each participant acts on limited information and pulls toward a different immediate objective. Most of those forces oppose and neutralize one another. But cancellation need not be total: changing positions and repeated local corrections leave a residual vector that carries the system forward. The apparent coordination is therefore an aggregate outcome, close to Spontaneous / Bottom-Up Order, rather than evidence that someone knew the complete route.

The ants do not agree on a direction before acting. Their wasteful-looking struggle is the process by which incompatible pulls are filtered out and a modest useful motion emerges.

Local cancellation can produce rough progress, but it can also leave no movement—or movement in the wrong direction. The model explains how order may emerge without a planner; it does not prove that every unplanned system is efficient, benign, or headed toward the right goal.
Measure the Remainder
When a team looks chaotic, map the strongest local pushes and the forces opposing them, then measure what actually moves after they cancel. Intervene in the few conflicts that erase the desired net motion instead of demanding that everyone follow one comprehensive plan.
