System 1 acts first, then delegates
System 1 moves first: it rapidly classifies and reacts, then decides whether a situation deserves slower, deliberate processing. System 2 is therefore an escalation path, not the mind’s default operating mode.
By the time your “thinking brain” starts, another part of you may have been acting for six-tenths of a second: System 1 responds in roughly 0.1 seconds, while System 2 does not even begin until around 0.7 seconds.
E1The gatekeeper sits downstairs
System 1 takes the first pass at incoming situations, producing an automatic classification and response before deliberate reasoning is available. Crucially, it also acts as the gatekeeper: only once in a while does it send the matter “upstairs” to System 2. The reusable model is not simply fast thought competing with slow thought; it is fast thought controlling access to slow thought. That timing gives System 1 vs System 2 its asymmetry: deliberation usually enters after an initial interpretation is already underway.

The timing establishes who moves first, not whether the first response is right or wrong. This evidence also does not specify exactly what triggers escalation, so the model cannot predict from timing alone when System 2 will be recruited.

For one consequential decision tomorrow, write down your immediate classification before acting, then explicitly send it to System 2 by stating what evidence would make that first reading wrong. The point is to trigger the escalation that otherwise happens only occasionally.
