Duplication is the hidden cost

If each villager secures both resources alone, both must perform—and switch between—the same two jobs. Dividing the labor removes that duplication: each person completes one task at sufficient scale, then trade reunites the outputs. The first payoff is shared time saved. Repetition can produce a second payoff as task-specific skill improves, creating a feedback loop between specialization and productivity. comparative-advantage can strengthen the arrangement further when people divide tasks according to their relative strengths rather than arbitrarily.

The village exchange reveals why cooperation need not be zero-sum. Neither person’s gain requires the other’s loss: coordinated specialization reduces the total effort needed to satisfy both people’s needs.

Specialization creates dependence

The model breaks when outputs cannot be reliably exchanged or when one specialist fails to deliver: abandoning duplicated capabilities also removes backup capacity. Nor can specialization begin indefinitely below subsistence; some surplus may be needed before people can sustain narrower roles.

Eliminate one duplicated task

Tomorrow, identify one recurring task that two people each perform end to end. Assign one person to produce enough of one component for both, the other to a different component, and exchange the results; compare the combined time with the previous duplicated workflow.
