Embracing Shortcomings means treating a limitation as a design constraint rather than a verdict on your ability. A weakness can become useful when it forces you to abandon an unavailable method and invent another.

R1When the blocked route changes the destination
A shortcoming removes an option you would otherwise take for granted. That disruption can expose the option’s real purpose and separate it from its familiar form: if you cannot show travel, you still need characters to arrive; if you cannot paint conventionally, you still need to compose with colour and shape. The constraint narrows the search space while creating pressure to find a substitute. This is close to Antifragility, but the gain comes from redesigning around the limitation, not merely enduring it.

After cancer confined Henri Matisse to a bed or chair and prevented him from painting as before, he developed his cut-out method. What began at small scale grew into room-sized work; the limitation did not improve the old technique—it pushed him toward a different medium.
R1A constraint is not automatically a gift
Shortcomings do not guarantee originality, and romanticising illness, disability, or scarcity mistakes the trigger for the achievement. The model applies when the underlying goal remains reachable by another route; some limits simply reduce what is possible and deserve accommodation, resources, or removal.
R1Preserve the aim, replace the method
Choose one project stalled by something you lack—money, mobility, skill, time—and write down the function your blocked method was meant to serve. Then make one rough version using a different medium or process that serves that same function. Judge the substitute on what it enables, not on how closely it imitates the unavailable route.
