The mind silently bridges missing steps in an explanation, converting an incomplete causal chain into a feeling of coherence. Fluency is therefore poor evidence that you understand how something works.

An explanation can contain holes and still feel complete: your brain crosses the gaps so smoothly that you experience the continuity, not the missing steps. The result is a peculiar failure—you can feel informed while remaining unable to say what happens between cause and effect.

The bridge your brain builds

An explanation supplies a sequence; the mind supplies continuity. Once the pieces form a plausible story, the transitions stop attracting attention, even when no account has been given of how one stage produces the next. That borrowed coherence can masquerade as understanding.

The decisive test is not whether the story sounds right but whether every arrow contains a causal-mechanism. Asking what physically, socially, or psychologically changes at each step turns the smooth outline into an inspectable model—and exposes where the explanation was relying on your cooperation.

A gap is not a refutation

Because explanations usually contain gaps, incompleteness alone does not make one false. Every useful account simplifies. The warning applies when an omitted step carries the causal burden: smoothing can explain unwarranted confidence, but it cannot by itself decide whether the underlying claim is correct. That distinction separates this mechanism from the broader illusion-of-explanatory-depth.

Interrogate one arrow

Tomorrow, take one explanation you are relying on and write it as A → B → C. Choose the least explicit arrow and complete this sentence: “A changes B by…” If you cannot name the process without repeating A or B, mark that transition as unknown instead of treating the whole story as understood.
