Honest Signaling of Mate Quality

mechanism

Some visible traits attract attention because they correlate with harder-to-see biological conditions such as hormone levels, fertility, or fitness. Beauty can therefore operate partly as an imperfect signal, rather than as arbitrary taste.

An hourglass figure may be attractive partly because of something you cannot see: the hormonal conditions associated with both that body shape and higher fertility.

E1

The visible trait carries hidden information

Mate quality cannot be inspected directly. Hormone levels, fertility, and overall fitness are largely concealed, so attention can become sensitive to outward traits that correlate with them. The visible feature is not necessarily valuable by itself; it matters because, across enough cases, it may carry information about an underlying biological condition. In the episode’s example, certain female hormones contribute to an hourglass figure and are also associated with fertility. Attraction is the response to the proxy, while reproductive fitness is the harder-to-observe variable behind it.

E1

A signal is not a diagnosis

Correlation does not make every individual appearance a reliable measure of fertility or fitness. The model explains why a preference might have a biological foothold; it does not establish that beauty is wholly biological, that one trait determines mate quality, or that an observer can infer someone’s condition with certainty.

E1

Ask what the trait is standing in for

When a feature feels immediately attractive, separate the visible cue from the hidden quality it may be signaling. Name the proposed underlying condition, then ask whether the cue is genuinely informative in this individual case or merely an unreliable proxy.
