The average criminal face and the average vegetarian face were both judged more attractive than ordinary faces. The shared ingredient was not character, diet, or lifestyle—it was averaging.

Averaging subtracts before it adds

When multiple faces are combined, features that depart from the group in different directions tend to cancel one another. Idiosyncratic proportions and conspicuous irregularities fade, while common features remain. The composite therefore presents fewer unusual deviations for perception to register. On this account, averaging does not assemble the most beautiful eyes, nose, and mouth; it smooths away exceptions. What feels like beauty may partly be the perceptual ease of finding nothing visibly alarming.

These groups carry sharply different social associations, yet their averaged faces produced the same attractiveness effect. That makes the averaging process—not the identity of either group—the revealing variable.

Typical is not the same as beautiful

This evidence shows that averaged composites can appear more attractive than normal faces; it does not establish that every average face is beautiful, that averageness is the only ingredient in beauty, or that observers are consciously screening for warning signals.

Separate attraction from distinction

The next time a face seems immediately attractive, ask which judgment you are making: “this has striking positive features” or “nothing here looks unusually off.” Treat those as competing explanations before attributing the response to exceptional beauty.
