The brain can build a standard by averaging repeated examples, then judge each new case by its distance from that prototype. The resulting preference feels objective even though its baseline may come from a small, local sample.

A baby may begin forming a standard of attractiveness within a single day, after seeing only five to thirty faces—most of them belonging to family. What later feels like a judgment about beauty may begin as an average of whoever happened to be nearby.

Your sample becomes your standard

Repeated examples are compressed into a statistical prototype: not a remembered individual, but a learned center against which new faces can be compared. Familiar-looking configurations sit nearer that center; unusual ones fall farther away. The mechanism is general—exposure supplies the data, averaging constructs the reference point, and distance from that point shapes judgment—but the evidence here establishes it specifically for early judgments of facial attractiveness. This is a compact case of Nature–Culture Interaction: the capacity to learn a preference may be built in while the surrounding faces determine what the learned standard contains.

A prototype is not a universal ideal

The finding does not show that every judgment of beauty is learned this way, or that averaging explains every feature you prefer. It shows that a baseline can form astonishingly quickly from limited exposure. Because those first examples are mostly local, the prototype records a sample—not an objective ranking of humanity.

Name the reference set

The next time a face strikes you as naturally attractive or unusual, write down the population silently serving as your comparison set—family, neighbourhood, media, or another familiar group. Then deliberately examine faces from outside that set before treating your first reaction as a universal verdict.
