Perception is not a neutral recording: expectations tell the brain what pattern to seek, and ambiguous sensory details are organized to match it. Once the pattern resolves, the same input can become difficult to see any other way.

A jumble of black and white patches becomes a Dalmatian the moment its outline is revealed. Nothing in the image has changed—but now you cannot unsee the dog.

The prediction reorganizes the pixels

With ambiguous input, sensory data alone may not determine what you perceive. A prior expectation supplies a candidate interpretation—“look for a Dalmatian”—and attention begins assigning scattered patches to its head, body, and legs. The signal has not become clearer; the brain has acquired a structure for reading it.

That makes perception partly constructive. Bottom-up details constrain what can be seen, while top-down expectations decide which details belong together. This is the core move behind Predictive Coding: perception emerges from the fit between an anticipated pattern and incoming evidence.

Expectations need something to organize

The episode demonstrates this mechanism under ambiguity, not the claim that expectation can manufacture any perception whatsoever. The Dalmatian becomes visible because the patches can support that interpretation; the example does not show what happens when sensory evidence clearly contradicts the prediction.

Prime the pattern before inspecting the noise

When someone cannot see a pattern you can see, provide a concrete reference—an outline, labeled feature, or worked example—then have them revisit the unchanged material. Compare what becomes noticeable after the cue; that difference reveals what expectation was contributing.
