Milk appears to vanish from a Ganesha statue. The startling part is not the disappearance: surface tension and capillary action can explain that. It is how quickly a physical effect can feel like an intentional response.

The blank demands an actor

An ambiguous event creates an explanatory gap. Hyperactive agency detection closes it by assigning intent: something did this, and did it for a reason. That move converts an impersonal process into a legible story with an actor, motive, and meaning. The causal order matters: the mind may supply the agent first and examine the mechanics later. Once the event has become an intentional act, an ordinary physical explanation must compete with a story that already feels complete.

The disappearing milk can be read in two incompatible ways: as matter moving through surface tension and capillary action, or as a statue deliberately accepting an offering. The same observation supports both stories until the underlying process is tested; agency detection makes the intentional one arrive with unusual force.

This mechanism does not imply that intentional explanations are always false. It identifies a failure mode: feeling that an event has purpose is not enough to distinguish an agent from a physical process. Where a mechanical account can reproduce the effect, the sense of intention adds no causal proof.

Tomorrow, when an unexplained event feels deliberate, write down the intentional account, then force yourself to name one mechanical alternative and a test that would separate them. For a liquid apparently being consumed, vary the surface, vessel, or contact conditions: if the effect tracks those physical changes, investigate capillary action before assigning intent.
